Glasgow athletes' village second phase to start in August with 125 homes planned

Construction of 125 new homes on Glasgow’s athletes’ village site in Dalmarnock is set to start in August.

Councillors have approved changes to an agreement with City Legacy Ltd for a second stage of development, allowing plans to progress.

Phase one of the project, which followed the 2014 Commonwealth Games, saw 300 private houses and 400 homes for social rent made available.

The change, agreed at a council meeting on Thursday, means phase two will be delivered in one stage rather than the original two.

Cllr Ruairi Kelly, the council’s convener for neighbourhood services and assets, said: “The athletes’ village was a landmark development for Dalmarnock and the East End of Glasgow, bringing high-quality homes for sale and social rent to the area”.

It was “a catalyst for the wider and ongoing regeneration of this part of the city”, he added.

“The approval of the development agreement will allow the construction of the second phase of the development to begin, with all the economic and social benefits this will bring to Glasgow.”

A council official told the meeting: “The developer is ready to commence phase two in August of this year and is proposing an amendment to deliver 125 units as one single phase.”

He said City Legacy Ltd is a “subsidiary company of CCG Scotland Ltd”, a construction and manufacturing firm.

Initially, the developer had planned to build 19 houses in phase one and 76 in a second stage, as land owned by Scottish Power needed to be acquired by the council.

The Scottish Power site is now available and the council said it makes “commercial sense” for work to progress in one phase.

Planning approval for 125 homes on the site was granted in 2021, after initial permission had expired. Plans revealed the work will include the “regeneration of the brownfield site utilised for the tented temporary village during the Commonwealth Games”.

The application added the scheme will connect the village “back to the existing community” to the west of the site.
