Glasgow artist creates amazing traffic cone sculpture made of 30,000 rhinestones

A Glasgow artist has spent an incredible five months creating an amazing traffic cone sculpture made of 30,000 rhinestones.

'Rhine-cone #1' has gone on display at the 24 Hour Window public street art space on King Street in the Trongate area of the city.

The new sculpture is the work of artist Alex Warner, a graduate in Fine Art Photography at Glasgow School of Art (GSA).

Also known as koolkatwarner, Warner is a artist/maker who works within a range of different mediums but works specifically using and exploring the uses of primary colours within day to day life.

Speaking about the scuplture, Alex said: "The cone is your bog standard no waiting cone but with over 30,000 red, yellow and blue rhinestones stuck on one by one all by hand. I did about an hour plus almost every day for five months to complete it.

"I graduated from GSA this year studying photography and do a lot of drawings, photography, painting and zine making and a lot of my work is made very quickly as I get distracted with projects and mediums really quickly, so I wanted to prove to myself I can stick by one project for a while and not get bored and decided covering a cone with rhinestones is the way forward.

"A lot of my work looks at themes of British consumerism and looking at modern everyday life as well as the repetition of primary colours throughout the urban landscape.

"With the rhinestone series I wanted to see what's the most stolen thing that I could then make it look expensive in the cheapest way possible. I thought the use of tiny plastic fake diamonds (rhinestones) were the best way to create that expensive look, while also looking totally ridiculous and funny."

Covered in red, yellow and blue rhinestones, the no-waiting cone is best viewed at night when it will be shining in all its glory at the 24 Hour Window street art space.

The new sculpture will be in the window gallery until December 9.
