Nicola Sturgeon warns Glasgow lockdown restrictions likely to remain in place

Strict rules banning people from mixing indoors across Glasgow and surrounding areas are likely to be kept in place after a review, Nicola Sturgeon indicated.

People in the region are not allowed to visit other households after a sharp rise in infections.

The measures are tougher than in the rest of the country where new rules imposed from today limit gatherings to two households indoors and outside.

The rules came in two weeks ago in Glasgow, East Renfrewshire and West Dunbartonshire. They were extended to Renfrewshire and East Dunbartonshire last week and are now up for a scheduled review.

The NHS Lanarkshire region was added to the list for extra restrictions on Friday night.

Sturgeon, at today’s official government update, said discussions continue with local health experts.

She warned: "I don't want to raise anybody's hopes right now that these types of restrictions are about to be lifted in the parts of Glasgow and Greater Clyde that they apply to.

"The case numbers we've seen in recent days have still been significant. It may be that these restrictions need a bit longer to have the desired effect."

Scotland's chief medical officer, Dr Gregor Smith, said a meeting was held before today's briefing on the situation.

He said there were signs of a slowing down, but added: "It's still too early to tell whether these measures are having a full effect yet."

It takes up to 14 days to see full signs of coronavirus, he added.
