Glasgow Airport used as late-night fueling stop for US military jets

Glasgow Airport is being used as a late-night fueling stop for US military jets.

Residents in the city were awoken by the sound of a plane, a Gulfstream IV jet, take off around 2:15am on Monday morning.

The plane in question, believed to have been a US Navy jet, flew from Glasgow to the Naval Station Rota in the Cadiz province of Spain - the largest American military community in the country.

The military variant of the Gulfstream IV business jets such as this plane are used by the Navy for the transport of military leaders, government officials, and other dignitaries, reports Business Insider.

A spokesman for Glasgow Airport confirmed that the flight did land and take off at the airport, and that it is not uncommon for military flights to use commercial airports.

The past few months has seen the airport used on numerous occasions by the UK Armed Forces for training flights - such as that of the Airbus A400M Atlas which circled the skies back on October 12.

Normally, US Military stopovers in Scotland take place at Glasgow Prestwick Airport, with 259 US military stopovers having taken place at the airport last year, compared to 145 back in 2016.
