Glasgow Airport treated to 'unexpected' landing of huge US military plane after diversion

Glasgow Airport was treated to the 'unexpected' landing of a huge American military plane this morning that wowed planespotters who gathered to get a glimpse of its arrival.

The plane in question was a USAF Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker, a military aerial refueling aircraft that has been used by the US military for over 50 years in conflicts such as the Gulf War and the Vietnam War to provide support for fighter jets and bombers.

With a 42 metre wingspan and possessing the ability to carry over 80,000 pounds of cargo, each plane is believed to cost around $40m - the same as a brand-new Gulfstream jet.

The reported reason for the Glasgow Airport landing around 7:15am - having first circled above Beith in North Ayrshire - was due to a 'weather diversion' from Prestwick Airport.

The plane is then believed to have flown on to its scheduled (further) destination of RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk, which supports United States Air Force operations.

Twitter account Glasgow Airport Spotters alerted people about the impending - unexpected - arrival this morning, sharing a screengrab of the flight path of the plane from global flight tracking service Flightradar 24 alongside the caption: "We have a visitor".

After it touched down on the Glasgow Airport tarmac, the account tweeted photos of the impressive plane, with the caption: "USAF Stratotanker parked up, not sure how long it’s here for but what an aircraft. 1st time I’ve seen one of these".

It must have made for an impressive sight for sure.
