Glasgow Airport strike - passengers delayed by long security queues

Passengers at Glasgow Airport are braced for potential delays as the first day of strike action kicks in.

The first of two 12-hour strikes began today as workers dispute their pay and pension.

Those travelling through the airport this morning (Friday) have already experienced delays, with Glasgow Airport issuing an apology over social media earlier on.

They say: "We apologise to our customers for the delay at security this morning. Following the commencement of industrial action and transition to our contingency in security, we have experienced longer than normal queues. We thank you for your patience and understanding."

Some passengers have hit out at the delays, while others have praised airport staff for ensuring passengers make their flights on time.

Heather Woods said on Twitter: "Everyone asking questions about how early flights will be made.

"Very long queues and little info left people feeling confused and unsure when actually we moved through steadily within 30 mins. Maybe just communicate a little? Actually very little need for concern as long as in plenty of time for flight."

Meanwhile, Hugo Jeffreys commented: "Absolute mayhem with security strikes. Security line going downstairs and out the door."

Michaela Hruskova however praised staff and added: "Personally, I thought that the security queue was really well managed the security check took a lot less time than I expected, judging by the length of the queue!".

Further strike action is planned on Monday (June 10) and Friday (June 14).

A spokesperson for AGS Airports, which owns Glasgow Airport, said: “We are extremely disappointed that Unite has served notice for a further date of industrial action, but would like to take this opportunity to reassure our passengers that robust contingency plans will be in place to ensure Glasgow Airport is fully operational on Friday 7, Monday 10 and Friday 14 of June."

UPDATE: Contingencies are now in place and the airport is "fully operational", according to a spokesman.

He told Glasgow Live: “We encountered longer than normal security times for a short period during our peak departure time and would apologise to our passengers for any inconvenience caused.

“It is important to highlight that the airport is fully operational and our contingencies are in place.

“We are working hard to ensure we keep any disruption to an absolute minimum during this period of industrial action.”
