Glasgow Airport flights circle runway after drone spotted near plane above Drumchapel

A number of flights were forced to circle above Glasgow Airport due to the runway being closed after a drone was spotted.

Planes were placed into a holding pattern after it was reported around three miles from the airport around 1.35pm on Sunday afternoon.

Police were called to investigate the report meanwhile the runway was closed as searches for the drone were carried out.

Several flights were left circling above the airport unable to land because of the item. The runway reopened after 20 minutes with controllers given the 'all clear'.

A spokesman for Glasgow Airport said: “Aircraft were placed in a temporary holding pattern while Police Scotland officers investigated a reported drone sighting approximately 3.5 miles from the airport. Flights resumed shortly after when was confirmed it was safe to continue operations.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Police received a report of a drone seen flying near a plane in the Drumchapel area around 1.35pm on Sunday, 11 September, 2022.

“Flights at Glasgow Airport were suspended for around 20 minutes while the area was searched.

"Enquiries are ongoing.”
