Glasgow Airport flight departures drop by over 80 per cent in a month

The number of flights departing Glasgow Airport has dropped by over 80 per cent in a month on account of the coronavirus crisis.

Several major airlines have grounded planes while countries have closed borders as the world battles against the pandemic.

As of today (Friday), just a handful of flights are set to depart Glasgow, the majority of them with domestic destinations. Loganair continue to operate services to the Highlands and Islands, however, as of Monday the airline will run just a skeleton schedule, to and from the Isle of Man and supporting workers in the offshore industry stationed near Aberdeen.

And figures shared with Glasgow Live by flight tracking website Flight Radar illustrate the dramatic fall in the number of planes taking off from the tarmac at Glasgow over the past month.

On February 26, there were 80 scheduled departures from Glasgow Airport. Yesterday, exactly a month later, only 15 departures were scheduled, a drop of 83.3 per cent.

A Glasgow Airport spokesperson today commented: "We are open and operational albeit on a reduced flight schedule supporting important lifeline services to the islands, the Scottish Air Ambulance Service based at the airport and a small number of key domestic and hub routes."

Transport Secretary Michael Matheson was yesterday quoted as saying: "Our aviation sector is facing an unprecedented challenge in the face of the coronavirus outbreak, so the Scottish Government is working with industry partners to ensure our lifeline air links continue to operate for the remote communities that depend on them."
