Gladys and Herman among unusual Met Eireann names chosen for storm season

The new storm names have been announced by Met Eireann for the 2021/22 season with some unusual additions to the list.

The Irish public may be hearing reports of storms Gladys, Herman and Eunice this year.

Met Eireann and the Met Office have released the lists of names since 2014, in an effort to raise awareness about the potential impacts of severe weather.

They were then joined by KNMI (the national weather services of the Netherlands) in 2019.

Each weather service chooses names that reflect their own nature and culture.

These are mainly suggested by members of the public.

Irish names like Barra, Méabh, Pól and Seán all made this year's cut.

Dudley also made an appearance on the list, a suspected nod to the the Harry Potter franchise.

Met Eireann's Head of Forecasting, Evelyn Cusack said that last year's storm season was quiet.

She said: "Last winter was relatively quiet with only one storm named by Met Éireann, Storm Aiden at Halloween.
