GKN Automotive announces start date of strike action at Birmingham factory

Continuous strike action will start later this month at a factory in Birmingham threatened with closure.

Staff at GKN Automotive in Erdington will begin the industrial action on September 27 which has no fixed end date.

Earlier this month, trade union Unite announced that workers had voted in favour of the action over plans announced in January to shut the base and transfer operations overseas.

The factory in Chester Road makes drivelines for the UK's automotive industry and more than 500 jobs are under threat if the closure plan goes ahead next year.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: "GKN's cynical attempt to close its Erdington plant is a disgrace. We will not stand by and let this employer offshore British jobs without a fight.

"We will leave no stone unturned in the ongoing battle to ensure the future of the Birmingham factory and our members."

The union said it had initially delayed issuing strike action and instead arranged a meeting with all interested parties to reach agreement on future production and support.

It said that the company refused to attend the meeting after initially accepting an invitation to do so which Unite said left it with "no option" but to initiate the strike action.

The wider GKN group, whose global headquarters are in Redditch and which is one of the UK's oldest engineering firms, was sold to Birmingham-based turnaround investor Melrose Industries in 2018 for £8.1 billion.

GKN said: "GKN Automotive is disappointed by the result of the ballot but respects the right of our colleagues to take legitimate industrial action.

"However, this does not change our difficult decision to close the Erdington plant."
