Gizbert eyes media on al-Jazeera

Former US marine Josh Rushing incurred the wrath of conservative bloggers everywhere when he joined Arab television channel al-Jazeera. The channel's latest signing, former ABC reporter Richard Gizbert, can presumably expect more of the same from his compatriots.

Gizbert, who won an unfair dismissal tribunal ruling against ABC after he refused to go to Iraq, will present a world media review programme on al-Jazeera's new English language service.

The western media can expect a grilling on the new show, called Listening Post. After all, one of the reasons al-Jazeera decided to set up its international service was the perception that their western equivalents failed to put the middle eastern point of view.

Gizbert said he was "thrilled" and looking forward to "challenging the norm".

The al-Jazeera show follows a long tradition of media shows in the UK, from Hard Talk and the Media Show on Channel 4 in the 1980s through What the Papers Say to Tyler Brule's short-lived The Desk on BBC4 last year.

Expect a lively debate - on all sides.
