
Winter may conjure images of bleakness, but the Hitachi Seaside Park in Hitachinaka, Ibaraki Prefecture, is awash in colors with the blooming of about 16,000 ice tulips in red, white, yellow and other assorted hues of 13 varieties. Now is the ideal season for ice tulips, whose bulbs are kept in cold storage and grown to bloom in winter. The special characteristic of the flower is that the low winter temperatures lengthen the blooming period. "That they can provide an abundance of color at a time of the year when there are few flowers really warms my heart," said a 73-year-old Hitachinaka housewife with a smile.
