Giving up takeaways, wine or coffee for a month could fund a destination holiday

Research has revealed that if travellers were to forego approximately eight takeaway pizzas, 12 pints and 10 daily coffees, they could fund a weekend in Italy.

Small changes to monthly budgets is a big tip for those in need of some savings and a holiday which is why a popular travel search engine has adopted a feature to make it easier to know what you're saving.

KAYAK has found that after more than a year of financial uncertainty for many, almost three in 10 people admitted that paying for a holiday this year will be harder than in previous years.

But they have created a Vacay Valuator that suggests what you could cut out of your budget and for how long and then tells you where you could fly to.

The top reasons cited by travel deprived Britons for finding it financially hard include having to prioritise how they spend money (45%), being worried about the future (42%) and having had a salary reduction (30%).

Based on a chosen timeline and the average costs of some everyday luxuries, travellers can choose what to save on and for how long.

This includes luxury coffees, takeaway food, subscription boxes, streaming services, booze and even trips to the hairdresser.

The Vacay Valuator will then quickly show what flight routes are available for that price to help holidaymakers find the best holiday for their budget.

For example, if you were willing to watch DVDs for three months and live without Amazon Prime or Netflix, that would save £66 and you could afford flights to Barcellona or Brussels from Edinburgh.

Giving up 16 pints and four bottles of wine for six months would save you around £528 and you'd be able to pick flights to over 100 destinations to suit your budget.

Laure Bornet, VP and General Manager, EMEA, at KAYAK said: “We know that the last 16 months have been financially challenging for many, and as people start to think about holidays again, many may be concerned about the financial viability of that much yearned-for trip overseas.

"At KAYAK, we help travellers find the best choice at the best price, whatever the destination and however they want to travel, and our new Vacay Valuator tool will help them discover simple shortcuts to fund the trip too."

Their research found that these were the top cutbacks people were willing to make to save for a holiday:

Top 10 temporary cutbacks

  • Cut out takeaways (30%)
  • Stop buying clothes (26%)
  • Stop drinking alcohol (17%)
  • Forego daily coffee (14%)
  • Shop on reselling sites over new clothes (12%)
  • Stop getting hair cut/coloured (12%)
  • Switch phone contract with reduced data allowance (12%)
  • Take the bus instead of a taxi (12%)
  • Take the bus or walk/cycle instead of the tube/train (12%)
  • Cancel TV subscription such as Sky, Netflix or Amazon (12%)

It’s important to make sure you are following government guidelines before travelling.
