But now, it's easier than ever to do at home, even without a steady hand.
TikTok user Maria Zarkova revealed how you can create the design yourself using a makeup sponge - and it's easier than you may think.
In a video that has been viewed more than almost 700,000 times, Maria starts by applying a small amount of white nail varnish to a beauty sponge.

On freshly painted nude nails, she then carefully presses her nail into the sponge, ensuring that the edges are coated in polish, to create a neat tip.
She then repeats this on every nail.
But Maria warns that you need to work quickly, as the nail varnish can dry quickly on the sponge.
Viewers were thrilled with the results and were quick to praise Maria for sharing the tip.
One person said: "Genius."
Another wrote: "I've tried all sorts of different ways to do French tip... I'll try this next time."
A third commented: "OMG THIS!! I love French manicures but they're so hard to do."
Dozens of other users tagged their pals in the video, encouraging them to give it a go for themselves.
This isn't the first nail tutorial Maria has shared on her TikTok account.
In another video, she demonstrates another method that's perfect if you don't have a sponge handy.
All you have to do is dab your nail varnish onto the opposite hand to the one you're painting and dip the tip of your nail into it.
