Give someone the gift of symmetry

If you are struggling to find a perfect gift for that special person in your life who has everything, mathematician and friend of the Science Weekly podcast Professor Marcus du Sautoy may have the solution.

For a donation to charity of $10 or more, the king of symmetry is offering to name a "symmetrical object in hyperspace" after your well-appointed mate. Up for grabs are "new symmetrical objects that have interesting connections with objects in number theory called elliptic curves. Here is the chance to claim one of these groups and have the group named after you."

The details are on du Sautoy's fundraising website "firstgiving" and you can keep track of the new names here. It's all in aid of Common Hope, an educational charity for children and their families in Guatemala.

To hear more about all things symmetrical and his latest book, listen to Marcus on an installment of the Science Weekly pod from February.
