'Give him up': Detective urges anyone shielding wanted fugitive John Tams to 'do the right thing'

Police hunting wanted fugitive John Tams have urged anyone helping him evade capture to "do the right thing" and hand him in.

The 56-year-old has been on the run for almost six months and police are warning the public not to approach him.

Detectives probing a number of offences which happened in Newcastle, including stalking and making threats to kill a woman, urgently want to speak to Tams.

But all attempts to find him have failed.

Cops believe he is now "actively avoiding" them and that others may be shielding him.

And today Det Chief Insp Paul Knox, of Northumbria Police, has warned anyone who is helping him that they should give him up now.

He said: "John Tams has been wanted now for more than five months and continues to avoid attempts by police to speak to him.

"If you are helping him evade police then you could be committing a criminal offence so I urge you to do the right thing and get in touch.

"He is wanted in connection with a serious offence and it is important that he is interviewed in regards to the allegations.

"Nobody can stay on the run forever and it will be better for him if he hands himself in to police sooner rather than later."

Tams, from Benwell, is known to have been staying in the Berwick area of Northumberland.

Police first made an appeal to trace him back in February, weeks after an investigation into the alleged offences they want to speak to him about came to light.

Detectives have circulated the fugitive's picture and released a description.

Tams, of Fergusons Lane, in Benwell, is described as being of stocky build. He is white, around 5ft 9ins tall, and has short grey hair.

Det Chief Insp Knox is also urging the public to be on the lookout for Tams, but has warned anyone who sees him not to approach him but to dial 999 immediately.

He added: "Enquiries to trace him are very much ongoing and we would once again ask the public to be on the lookout for him.

"Anyone who sees a man matching his description, or has information about his whereabouts, should call police immediately."

Anyone with any information about Tams' whereabouts, or who sees him, is asked to call 999 quoting reference 47743.

Reports can be made anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
