Girvan named the best place in Scotland for a day at the beach

Girvan has been named as the NUMBER ONE place in Scotland for a day at the beach.

And Ayr has come second on the list, which looks at criteria including the best fish and chips, parking and the price of beer.

The latest study by The Solar Centre on Scottish resorts looked to find the best places for a day at the seaside.

The tourism industry has taken a huge hit this year – but things are finally starting to look up after the industry was given the green light to return on June 15.

Last week Nicola Sturgeon warned against booking foreign holidays after a ‘worrying’ Covid spike in Europe.

The First Minister said she could remove any country from her quarantine-free list, after many Spanish holidays were cancelled when the country was suddenly readded.

Warning she was prepared to treat other countries like Spain, Ms. Sturgeon said: “Right now, be very, very cautious about booking foreign travel that is not essential because you don’t know that when you’re in a country they may change their regulations.

“So you might find yourself restricted in that country and when you go to come home you might find that the quarantine rules have changed here.

“I wouldn’t be booking a foreign holiday right now because of these reasons.”

It means many Scots are planning a ‘Staycation’ rather than heading abroad and the data from eco brand The Solar Centre aims to highlight just how many beautiful coastal areas Scotland has to offer – and that there’s plenty of areas to explore.

Figures were generated by looking at a range of desireable factors including temperature, cloudiness, water temperature, fish and chips, parking, beaches and the price of a pint.

Girvan came out on top overall – scoring full marks for parking and only just missing out to Dunoon, Argylle and Bute for the best chippy award.

Ayr scooped silver and, perhaps surprisingly, topped the Scottish list in the water temperature table.

Less surpisingly it struggled on the parking charts, but there you have it – who needs the Costa del Sol when you’ve got the Costa del Carrick just down the road.
