Girvan councillor emerges as favourite to become new SNP leader of South Ayrshire Council as three compete for job

Girvan councillor Peter Henderson has emerged as the favourite to become South Ayrshire's new leader.

The Ayrshire Post understands the member for Carrick is in pole position ahead of a key vote among SNP colleagues.

They will be asked to nominate their choice for a new boss following the resignation of Douglas Campbell.

Maybole councillor and current SNP number two, William Grant, is also trying to garner sufficient support in the race to replace the outgoing leader.

And party sources claim it could come down to just a single vote, with the SNP's nine councillors "split" on their choice.

"As things stand Peter just about has the numbers," said one insider.

"The group is pretty much split down the middle and there's no margin for error either way.

"But if the vote were held tomorrow, Peter would come out on top."

The SNP group will be asked to swing behind their nominee next week ahead of a vote at full council later this month.

It comes as the council's current depute leader, Labour councillor Brian McGinley, also threw his hat into the ring.

Cllr McGinley claimed he is open to being "leader or co-leader" and will enter any negotiations with "an open mind".

He told the Post: "If the elected members wish me, based on my previous track record of sound commitments, abilities, and experience, to serve as leader or co-leader then these are propositions that I would be honoured to accept.

"I will enter into negotiations with an open mind and open heart so that I am able to put the needs of the local communities at the centre of these discussions."

He added: "I acknowledge there has been some criticism of late that the council needs to refocus on its strategic direction and ensure best value through delivering on the council plan."
