Giroux scores winner as Flyers beat Canucks in shootout

PHILADELPHIA _ On a night when the Flyers brought back former standouts to celebrate some of the greatest plays in franchise history, the Orange and Black's defensive coverage probably made them cringe.

Ditto their discipline Thursday night as they gave Vancouver eight power plays.

But they overcame their shortcomings and rallied for a 5-4 shootout win over the Canucks at the Wells Fargo Center.

In the shootout, Claude Giroux scored the winner and Michal Neuvirth, who entered the game in a relief role, stopped all three shots he faced.

Canucks goalie Ryan Miller fell to 57-34 in shootouts. He is the NHL's all-time leader in career shootout wins.

The Flyers' penalty killers excelled as they keyed just their third victory in the last 12 games. Vancouver suffered its third straight defeat.

Miller (31 saves) stopped Wayne Simmonds from the doorstep with 3:28 left in overtime. About a minute later, Ivan Provorov fired wide on a three-on-one.

With just under two minutes left in OT, Neuvirth stopped Brandon Sutter's right-wing blast, then fell on the rebound as it bounced around the blue paint.

In regulation, Miller denied Provorov from in close with 6:04 left. Five seconds later, Sean Couturier went to the penalty box for hooking.

The Flyers did not allow any shots on the ensuing power play. They killed seven of eight on the night.

Brayden Schenn had tied the score at 4, diving to reach Giroux's pass from behind the goal line and falling to the ice as his left-circle shot whizzed past Miller with 19:03 left in the third. It was Schenn's 10th power-play goal, tops in the NHL.

Neuvirth replaced a shaky Steve Mason (four goals on 24 shots) to start the third period.

Vancouver, which finished with a 38-35 shots edge, had taken a 4-3 lead when Sutter, allowed to skate into the slot untouched, took a drop pass from Jayson Megna and beat Mason with 7:14 to go in the second period.

A little less than three minutes earlier, the Canucks had tied the score at 3 when Markus Granlund got inside position on Shayne Gostisbehere and put a point-blank shot through Mason's legs for his second goal of the night.

Shortly before Granlund's goal, the Flyers had taken a brief 3-2 lead as Pierre-Edouard Bellemare (first goal in 15 games) and Sean Couturier scored 18 seconds apart.

Bellemare converted a Matt Read pass by firing a one-timer from the high slot past Ryan Miller with 10:39 left in the second.

"I got lucky. I got all of it," Bellemare said. "I just wanted to make sure I touched the net and it ended up finding the right spot."

Couturier scored from the doorstep, finishing a backdoor play that featured Jake Voraeck's slick pass.

The Flyers gave the Canucks a pair of four-minute high-sticking penalties and two five-on-three power plays in the opening period and were fortunate to be in a 1-1 tie after 20 minutes.

It was a period in which Brandon Manning and Michael Del Zotto each accumulated six penalty minutes, and the Flyers were outshot, 13-8.

Daniel Sedin, the player who took Del Zotto's high-stick to the face, ripped a tracer over Mason's left shoulder from the high slot to put the Canucks ahead, 1-0, midway through the first period. The Canucks had a five-on-three power play at the time, and it marked the seventh straight game that the Flyers had surrendered the first goal.

Travis Konecny tied the game about five minutes later. Konecny scored from the slot after Dale Weise made a nice pass by swatting a bouncing puck out of the air.

Just 1:51 into the second period, Granlund made it 2-1 by scoring on a scramble out front as Manning was coming out of the penalty box.
