Hillary Clinton is continuing her efforts to connect with young voters by having actor Lena Dunham campaign on her behalf in Iowa next month.
Dunham, the star and creator of the HBO show Girls, will appear at campaign rallies in Des Moines and Iowa City on 9 January. In an email sent out by the Clinton campaign, a staffer wrote: “Lena’s coming to spend some time with the Hillary for Iowa team, and you could meet her … Just picture the selfie you’ll take together after you talk about how much you both love Hillary and other super-smart feminists you know!”
Clinton previously appeared in an online interview with Dunham in September and also recently filmed a cameo for the Comedy Central show Broad City about two female best friends in their 20s who live in New York.
Dunham, whose HBO show often features her appearances in the nude, has long been vocal about her support for Clinton’s campaign and her ardent advocacy for abortion rights. Dunham even dressed up as a Planned Parenthood doctor for Halloween.
Dunham may not be the ideal celebrity surrogate for all of Iowa, which has a significant Catholic population in the heavily Democratic north-east part of the state. After all, what plays in Brooklyn, New York, may be less popular in Brooklyn, Iowa (population 1,468).
Instead, Dunham will be appearing in Des Moines, Iowa’s capital, which has a rapidly growing hipster population, and the bustling college town of Iowa City, home to the University of Iowa.
She also isn’t the first television star to appear on Clinton’s behalf in Iowa. Just this past weekend, Tony Goldwyn of the ABC show Scandal made a number of stops in the Hawkeye State to promote Clinton’s candidacy.
