Girls hoops: No. 3 Fremd zones out No. 13 Batavia at Willowbrook

Jan. 19--Batavia played solid basketball for the first 10 minutes Monday against Fremd.

The rest of the game did not go the Bulldogs' way.

No. 3 Fremd switched its defense in the second quarter, and allowed five points over the next 15 minutes. The stretch was key in the Vikings' 65-29 rout of the No. 13 Bulldogs at Willowbrook's Subway Prep Classic.

Behind 10 early points from Hannah Frazier, Batavia momentarily stayed with the taller and deeper Vikings. Frazier's basket in the second quarter tied the game 17-17, but Fremd's decision to switch to a 2-3 zone changed the game. The 6-foot-2 Frazier, who finished with 18 points, had difficulty finding open looks.

The Bulldogs made two of their next 25 shots and committed six turnovers in the decisive 15-minute span, which ended with Fremd ahead 48-22. Batavia (16-5) did not score in the third quarter, and at one point missed six shots during one possession.

Meanwhile, the Vikings (18-2) made 7 or 8 field goals during a five-minute stretch of the second quarter.

"We went to a zone just to do something different," Fremd coach Dave Yates said. "Hannah Frazier is a great player. I thought that was one good adjustment, then we started to limit her touches and get back-side help."

Fremd junior center Grace Tworek made two 3-pointers during a 16-0 run that Brianna Lewis closed with two baskets. Lewis, a senior point guard, scored a team-high 17 points and added four steals.

The 6-2 Tworek, a Harvard recruit, made the Bulldogs pay for daring her to shoot from the outside. She made 6 of 11 shots and had 16 points, seven rebounds and three blocks.

"It was fun because they really didn't guard me from the outside," Tworek said. "It was nice to be able to knock down a lot of shots."
