Girlfriend of sacked Border Force boss given community service for lying

Sarah Rogers (right) gave false evidence to a corruption probe, the court found.

The girlfriend of former Australian Border Force boss Roman Quaedvlieg has been sentenced to community service for giving false information about their relationship.

Sarah Rogers, 24, pleaded guilty in February to giving misleading information and disclosing the existence of a summons.

Mr Quaedvlieg was sacked last March after an investigation found he helped Rogers secure a job within his department at Sydney Airport.

The charges came about after Mr Quaedvlieg was last year tied up in a stoush with Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton, who used parliamentary privilege to accuse him of grooming a woman 30 years his junior.

Rogers gave evidence to a corruption probe that Mr Quaedvlieg had nothing to do with giving her advice about her job application, which was initially unsuccessful before she tried again in October 2016.

Whatsapp messages exchanged between the pair showed she received "extensive advice", Sydney's Downing Centre Local Court today heard.

Magistrate Jennifer Atkinson said Rogers' disclosure to her partner that she had been called to give evidence to a corruption probe by the Australian Commission for Law Enforcement Integrity was a serious matter.

"There are important policy reasons why matters such as this need to be kept confidential," she said.

Ms Atkinson said such disclosures could affect how a person prepared for a corruption investigation and Ms Rogers had been told, both in writing and orally, she was not to discuss the matter.

Ms Atkinson said the only available inference was that Rogers was "deliberately attempting to frustrate the investigation".

Rogers was sentenced to a seven month intensive corrections order and 100 hours of community service for each offence, to be served concurrently.

A second charge of lying to federal investigators was previously dropped.
