Nothing says “welcome to the family” like your future mother-in-law showing up to your wedding dressed like the bride. A TikToker is going viral after revealing the glittery, silver, suspiciously bridal gown her fiancé’s mom wants to wear for the wedding just three weeks away. Amid her bafflement and anger, her sole question stands out: What are you supposed to do in this situation?
What’s the issue?
It all starts when K (@kmacb98) receives a text message and decides to share her frustration with the world. As people immediately started taking sides, the TikTok has reached almost 2 million views in just six days. She starts the one-minute clip by saying, “I just needed to show someone what the [expletive] my in-laws just texted me.”
She then shows a screenshot of her conversation with her future father-in-law, where he writes, “Kory [future mother-in-law] wants to know if she can wear this dress. For yalls wedding.”
At first glance, the dress is immediately attention-grabbing in a matrimonial style and color. Simply put, there was no way it wouldn’t turn heads away from the actual bride. Even worse, K says that the mother-in-law is already wearing it in the photo.
K retorts, “Did our wedding get moved to Vegas without me knowing?” to only get the response of the father-in-law saying, “She was just asking.”
As if voicing everyone’s disbelief, K says out loud, “Oh, so you’re serious?”
What is toxic mother-in-law behavior?
It seems this isn’t a new phenomenon for soon-to-be daughters-in-law. In fact, it’s one of the most popular posts on Reddit. It’s often noticed in popular subreddits like r/weddingplanning or r/justnoMIL. A mother-in-law choosing to wear a bridal gown for their son’s wedding is attention-seeking, according to Psychology Today. If you Google “Mother-in-law wears white [or] wedding dress to a wedding,” countless articles pop up. Some as recently as this year to dating back decades. The Mary Sue even covered an instance where the mother-in-law went ahead and bought what she called a “pink” dress for the wedding. Luckily, her son stopped her before she could actually wear it on the day.
Who’s on whose side?
Even though an army of comments came out to defend and support the creator, there were still enough comments to say the overall consensus was divided.
On one hand, one viewer wrote, “The crash out is valid. Be clear and tell them no” while another said, “Your fiancé needs to have a conversation with her SWIFTLY.”
On the other hand, people seem to refuse to believe it is true because someone wouldn’t really do that, right? One viewer says, “This has to be an AI prank.” While another states, “Has to be a joke- has to be??”
Lastly, maybe playing devil’s advocate or maybe even oblivious to the entire drama attached to this phenomenon, one viewer comments: “She looks amazing. What’s the problem?”
@kmacb98 Hey guys what am I supposed to do in this situation? Asking for myself thanks. #weddingplanning #motherofthegroom #houstontx #inlawscomedy ♬ original sound – K$
