Girl, 13, suffers third degree burns and loses use of arm copying TikTok 'challenge'

A teenage girl has suffered severe third degree burns and lost mobility in an arm after attempting to recreate a TikTok trend, her family have stated.

13-year-old Destini Crane had taken a candle, a lighter and rubbing alcohol into the bathroom to try draw a shape on the mirror and then set it alight, according to The Mirror.

The trend went horribly wrong and Kimberly's mum heard her daughter screaming for help after the alcohol exploded in the small space.

She was taken from her home in Portland, Oregon, USA, to the hospital following the incident which took place on May 13 and she has been in the intensive care unit ever since.

Kimberly told ABC News yesterday: "I was in the living room talking with my mom, and I heard her scream my name.

"So I went and opened the bathroom door and everything was on fire. Destini was on fire. Things in the bathroom were on fire."

She took off the girl's shirt while a neighbour called for an ambulance, but the teen had already suffered third degree burns.

Destini severely burnt her neck and right arm and has had to undergo three skin-grafting surgeries.

"I know that when she wakes up and fully understands, she’s probably going to freak out," Kimberly added.

After speaking to her daughter's friends and looking at what had been left behind in the bathroom, the concerned mum was able to work out what Kimberly had been trying to do.

When she retrieved Destini's phone, TikTok was still recording a video.

Kimberly said her daughter "lived for TikToks".

She is expected to have several months of recovery ahead of her, including inpatient rehabilitation to regain use of her arm and mobility in her neck, shoulders and fingers.

Destini's family have warned other parents about ensuring their children are not attempting to copy highly dangerous fads seen on social media.

The minimum age for TikTok is 13, according to the app's terms of service.
