Girl stabbed 'after row with group of boys' in city centre fights for life

A girl is fighting for her life tonight after being stabbed in Liverpool city centre.

Police this evening cordoned off a large part of Church Street and the surrounding area after the girl was stabbed at around 8.39pm.

It is believed the victim was with friends on Church Alley, close to the busy shopping street, when what police described as a "verbal argument" broke out with a group of boys. One of the boys is believed to have assaulted the girl and they are believed to have run off from the scene.

Her family are with her in hospital, police said, in a statement in which they described her condition as critical. The girl's age was not provided in their initial statement.

A cordon was in place on Church Street and Church Alley, with several surrounding streets also blocked off. The cordon was reportedly extended to Hanover Street.

Several police cars remained at the scene this evening as enquiries continued.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has information which could help police with their enquiries, is asked to DM @MerPolCC, message ‘Merseyside Police Contact Centre on Facebook’ or @CrimestoppersUK on 0800 555 111 with reference 0899 of November 25.
