The six-year-old, who has not been named, was struck down at Gosforth Park First School, Newcastle Upon Tyne just after 1pm on Friday.

Emergency services raced the young girl to hospital following the incident.

Police confirmed that she sadly passed away on Saturday.

A spokeswoman from Northumbria Police said: "At 1.15pm yesterday we received a report that a child had been struck by a falling tree at Gosforth Park First School.

"Emergency services attended the scene and the six-year-old girl was taken to hospital.

"Sadly, earlier today, the young girl passed away.

"An investigation has been launched with police working in conjunction with the health and safety executive."

Police said the family had asked for privacy.

A spokesman for the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) said: "HSE is aware that this is now a fatal incident and we will work alongside Northumbria Police to investigate.
