Girl's heart stopped for two minutes due to condition 'triggered by coronavirus'

A 12-year-old girl's heart stopped beating for two minutes after she developed a rare condition doctors believe was triggered by coronavirus.

Juliette Daly was described as a perfectly healthy and active child who did not have underlying health issues.

But three weeks ago she was airlifted to a hospital in New Orleans and fighting for her life on an intubator as she suffered heart failure.

Little Juliette temporarily went into cardiac arrest, her mum says, speaking of her trauma during those terrifying two minutes and how her world crumbled.

Luckily Juliette has recovered but her story comes as NHS England warned that a coronavirus-related inflammatory syndrome is emerging in children in the UK or that there may be another, as yet unidentified, infection linked to these cases.

"We have become aware in the last few days of reports of severe illness in children which might be a Kawasaki-like disease," Stephen Powis, national medical director for England, said.

Juliette's mum Jennifer Daly told WBRZ 2 : "After they put the breathing tube down her throat, her heart stopped and they had to do extreme measures.

"They had to do two minutes of CPR. At that point, my whole world just crumbled."

Juliette had not been showing typical symptoms of coronavirus before she tested positive for the disease.

The youngster had no fever, cough or trouble breathing.

She was also diagnosed with a rare heart condition doctors reportedly say was likely triggered by Covid-19.

Juliette has luckily recovered and her mum says she is grateful medics could diagnose her daughter and treat her so quickly.

This week the UK government has warned about a rare condition in children being linked to coronavirus.

Britain's top medics are probing a potential link between an inflammatory disease which severely affects children and could be linked to Covid-19.

Health minister Matt Hancock said he was "very worried" about reports of children struggling with severe

Stephen Powis said: "I've asked the national clinic director for children and young people to look into this as a matter of urgency...

"We're not sure at the moment. It's really too early to say whether there is a link."
