Girl released from hospital as investigation begins into school wall fall

A school has issued an apology after a nine-year-old girl was injured when part of a wall fell down.

Police and paramedics were called to St Mary Magdalene C of E Primary School, in Sutton in Ashfield, at about 12.20pm yesterday, December 19. It remains closed today, while investigations take place.

The child was taken to King's Mill Hospital for treatment but has now been released.

In a statement following the incident, a spokesperson for the school said: "There was an incident where some brickwork fell from an external wall at St Mary’s yesterday.

"A child was taken to hospital and has since been released. We apologise unreservedly for the distress caused by this and are taking every precaution following the incident.

"Therefore we have decided to close the school today when a structural engineer will review the situation. We will act on the advice given going forward."

The incident has since been classed an "industrial accident" by Nottinghamshire Police.

East Midlands Ambulance Service also sent a Hazardous Area Response Team to the scene.

The Health and Safety Executive has also been made aware of the incident and is making initial enquiries.
