Girl left badly hurt after simple stairgate accident

An eight-year-old girl suffered an injury that has left her on antibiotics for a week and her mum is now warning others of the dangers of baby gates.

Olivia Connor suffered a large cut to her side after swinging on the baby gate at her home in Hull, reports HullLive.

Mum Ruby Rivers says there is no fault with the gate, and that Olivia injured herself because she was swinging on it, but she says she wants all parents and children to be aware of the danger.

Ruby says Olivia swung on the gate and as she put her feet down she dropped and sliced her side on the edge of the gate.

Her Facebook post said: "I feel like I should post this to make others aware because what child hasn’t swung on the safety gate at least once?

"We’ve spent the day in hospital today because Olivia was swinging on her safety gate and as she’s put her feet down and let go, she’s dropped and caught her side on the edge bit that the gate clips into, pretty much taking a chunk out of her side!

"She’s on antibiotics in case of infection and back at doctors at the end of the week but she’s definitely lucky."

Speaking to Hull Live, Ms Rivers said she hopes parents will show her post will to other children to stop them hurting themselves.

She said: "If it stops one child swinging and hurting themselves some good's come out of it, hasn't it?

"She shouldn’t have been swinging and knows that, I’m forever telling her.

"I’d never have thought of anything like this happening though, I’ve only ever worried about the gate coming loose and falling and them getting a bruise or two, you hear that happening all the time, but nothing like this.

"She is OK though, she has been brilliant about it because she freaks out at blood."

Ms Rivers took Olivia to A&E where she was prescribed antibiotics as a precaution to fight any infection.

Ms Rivers bought the Mamia pressure fit gate from Aldi in the sale for £4.99 but said there is no fault with it.

She said: "The gate is a Mamia pressure fit gate from Aldi but this could happen with any gate they’re all pretty similar.

"I’m not complaining to Aldi or anything, it could happen with any gate, but so many children swing off them don’t they."
