Witness describes mother's anguish after daughters hit by reversing car

The silver hatchback that police say reversed into a mother and her two daughters.

A six-year-old girl has been killed after an elderly woman reversed her car into a mother and her two children in a Sunshine Coast centre carpark.

Police said the 37-year-old woman and her two children were on a pedestrian crossing at the Nambour supermarket when the hatchback reversed into them about midday on Sunday.

A witness said the children were sent flying by the impact.

"The mum was here and all you could hear was just her crying and her saying 'my babies, my babies'," she said.

"There was a huddle of people doing CPR on the kids and it felt like it went on forever."

The six-year-old girl was taken to Nambour Hospital where she died.

An eight-year-old girl suffered non-life threatening leg injuries.

The 86-year-old driver wasn't injured.

Dozens of Nambour residents gathered at a nearby park on Sunday night for a candlelight vigil to mourn the young girl.

Deanne Pokarier said her husband was on scene shortly after the accident and said she had come to pay her respects.

"We have a six-year-old ourselves, so it was all a little bit overwhelming — banding together, it shows we care about each other," she said.

The Nambour mother said she had heard reports of other near-misses at the same pedestrian crossing.

"Something tragic has happened and something really should be put in place so that it never happens again," she said.

Senior Sergeant Matt Campbell said the incident was being investigated by the Forensic Crash Unit.

"It's still very early days in the investigation but what I can tell you is that there is an 86-year-old female driver that is assisting us in our inquiries," he said.
