Girl injured at steam fair dies in hospital

A five-year-old girl has died at a vintage steam fair after being hit by a slow-moving vehicle. Efforts to resuscitate the girl on Saturday morning at the Lanlivery steam fair near Lostwithiel, Cornwall, were unsuccessful, police confirmed.

The child's foster parents gave permission for the well-established annual two-day event to continue today. They also attended a church service at the field in remembrance of the child.

"The child was treated by paramedics at the scene within a minute of the incident occurring as they were present at the show on a display stand within 100m of the location," a Devon and Cornwall police spokesman said. The girl was flown to Derriford hospital, Plymouth, where she died.

Diane Williams, event secretary, said: "It was a tragic accident, a tragic accident. Our hearts go out to them."
