With the rise of mobile payment services like Apple Pay, it’s getting easier by the day to leave home without a bag or wallet.
Back in the day, bags or cargo pants were basically a necessity. You needed a place for your cash, your cards, your car keys, your apartment or house keys—otherwise, how were you going to leave the house?
Now, however, many of these necessities have migrated to the phone. While this has made some things easier, it can also put you in a pretty awkward spot if your phone runs out of battery.
A user on TikTok recently shared one such awkward story—and she couldn’t believe how it ended.
What Happened When This Bar Customer Tried to Use Apple Pay?
In a video with over 555,000 views, TikToker Jenn (@springjenn) recounts something she says happened while working at a bar.
According to Jenn, she was at work when a man asked if he could pay for his bill with Apple Pay. She said he could. However, when she pulled out her Toast POS device, the man realized his phone was dead.
“He looks at the girl sitting at the table, and he goes, ‘Hey, can you pay the bill and I’ll Venmo you?’” Jenn recalls. “She doesn’t even look up. She’s just typing, like, super fast on her phone.”
After about 30 seconds, Jenn says she’ll come back. The man cut her off and insisted that the woman could pay.
What Happened Next?
The man then repeated his question toward the woman, to which she responded with a statement that left Jenn floored.
“The way that this girl snaps her head up and she looks directly at me and she goes, ‘Girl, I’m gonna be so honest with you. I just found out he’s cheating on me. I’m not paying the f—ing bill,’” Jenn recounts.
“The silence that followed after that between the three of us was, like, a solid minute, maybe minute and a half,” she continues. “And then, I just said, ‘Oh’ — and he just, like, turns around and walks out.”
From here, the woman began crying, telling Jenn that she did not want to “f— [her] over,” she just didn’t want to pay the bar tab of the man who was cheating on her.
“I’m like, honestly, so fair, babe,” Jenn concludes. “Fuck him.”
What Happens to an Unpaid Bar Tab?
In the comments section, Jenn says that her work ended up comping the bill. Not only that, but she says that the company Toast, which manufactures the POS system mentioned in her story, reached out to her and left her a tip via Venmo.
Still, many commenters were left wondering what happens when a bar bill goes unpaid.
In some cases, management may attempt to make a server or bartender pay for the walkout. However, this is illegal in many cases, and experts call such schemes unethical.
In others cases, like the one experienced by Jenn, the bar will simply comp the bill, sometimes barring the customer who ran up the bill from returning. If the customer has opened a tab, and has a credit card on file, the bar will generally attempt to charge that card. Some bars will continue to attempt to charge the card for months if the original charge does not go through.

Commenters Share Their Thoughts
In the comments section, users explained how they personally would have reacted to the situation.
“The way I would’ve comped anything she got and told him he needs to figure it out or I’m calling the cops,” said a user.
“There’s gotta be a charger in that bar SOMEWHERE,” stated another. “I wouldn’t have paid either!!”
“Well if he walked out on the bill, she could provide his info to the police for you and pay for her portion?” offered a third.
