Girl hospitalised after being hit by car while boy chased her with lit firework

A girl has been hit by a car after being chased by boys with fireworks in the street.

She was admitted to hospital after being struck while "avoiding a male running with a lit firework" in West Belfast, police said.

The incident happened around 7:45pm, on Stewartstown Road, West Belfast on Tuesday evening.

A group of boys had been throwing fireworks at teenage girls, Belfast Live reports.

In a statement, Sergeant Hakin said: “It was then reported that one of the males ran towards one of the females with a lit firework.

"As she attempted to avoid the male, she collided with the driver’s side of a grey Ford Fiesta which was driving close to the McKinstry Road roundabout.

"The female was taken to hospital for her injuries."

Sinn Féin councillor Daniel Baker said: "It’s that time of year where fireworks become an unwelcome nuisance to our community.

"Setting them off or throwing them toward people is never to be tolerated especially at a well known danger hot spot, such as the McKinstry Roundabout.

"I’m imploring young people to not take part in this sort of wreck less behaviour."

Sergeant Hakin added: “Enquiries are continuing and we would appeal to anyone who witnessed the incident, or anyone with dashcam footage taken from the area at the time to contact police on 101 quoting reference number 1742 19/10/21

"Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime.”
