Girl hit by a car on A1 in Northumberland taken to hospital with head and back injuries

The A1 was closed to traffic after a little girl was hit by a car.

The girl had to be taken to hospital and was treated for head and back injuries after being involved in the collision on Sunday.

Emergency services received a report of a collision involving a child and a car on the A1 southbound near Low Whittle, in north Northumberland.

Police officers and the emergency services attended the scene on Sunday at around 1.45pm.

A paramedic treated the child, who had a "'serious but not life-threatening head injury" and a back injury. She was then taken to Northumbria Hospital in Cramlington and police have confirmed she has since been discharged.

The road was closed while emergency services were in attendance but reopened a short time after.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly before 1.45pm yesterday (Sunday) we received a report a child had been struck by a car on the A1 southbound near Low Whittle.

“Officers and emergency services attended and the girl was taken to hospital with a serious but not life-threatening head injury. She has since been discharged.

“The road was closed while emergency services were in attendance but reopened a short time after.”

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We received a call at 1.40pm on Sunday to reports of a collision in involving a car and a child pedestrian.

"The child was treated by a paramedic for head and back injuries, which were not believed to be life-threatening. The child was then taken to Northumbria Hospital."
