Girl found with knife in school in 'worrying' incident

A pupil at an all girls' school was found in possession of a knife during the school day.

A pupil at Greenbank High School in Southport was found with a knife in school on March 22. The ECHO was made aware of the incident by a parent who passed on information regarding the incident from the school, adding it was "very worrying".

An email seen by the ECHO from the school's headteacher said although the concerning issue was a "very rare incident," the school was investigating with the "utmost urgency and the relevant steps are being taken".

The full email dated from today read: "I am writing to make you aware that yesterday one of our pupils was found with a knife in school. Please be assured that this is a very rare incident and is being investigated with the utmost urgency and the relevant steps are being taken.

"It is a reminder of the importance of talking to young people about knives and that carrying a knife is a criminal offence that poses a risk of harm to the individual and the community. I will do a brief assembly with all pupils regarding this in the morning and there are planned sessions on knife crime after the Spring break.

"As ever, it is key to work together to support young people with this and would ask that all parents and carers regularly discuss this aspect of your child’s safety with them."

The ECHO contacted Greenbank High School for more information but had not received a response at the time of writing.

A spokesperson from Merseyside Police confirmed to the ECHO a report has been made regarding the incident and officers are looking into it.
