One woman had an idea for a tattoo that her husband didn’t like, so she asked the internet for advice. I regret to say, the girlies were not behind her on this one.
“OK, I need the girlies’ opinion,” McKenna (@mcennnaalynn) begins in her viral TikTok. “My husband is being an absolute hater on the placement of the tattoo I want.”
She notes that she’s a stay-at-home mom, so she has no concerns about professionalism. “If sometime down the road I need to worry about that, whatever,” she adds.
McKenna then says she wants to get “a little dainty word” in the middle of her chest, right above the breast.
She says her husband retches at the idea. “He doesn’t have vision, though,” she says. McKenna adds that while she will do whatever she wants in the end, she wants his opinion and also the opinions of outsiders. “Let me know,” she says.
‘Girl don’t do it’
In the comments section, viewers agreed with McKenna’s husband that the placement was a no.
“As a heavily tattooed person, no. That placement will feel dated in a few years,” one viewer said.
“No imagine having a necklace on and the tattoo and necklace not being aligned,” a second wrote.
Another said, “No. That area statistically gets the most sun damage and will not look the same in 5 years. I would just get a necklace.”
One viewer pointed out, “About 2 inches up from where you pointed, you have a dainty word already, on a removable necklace! maybe just get a longer chain if you want it lower?”
‘Live your life now babe’
Other viewers were less concerned about whether the placement would still be trendy in a few years and told her to just go for it.
One wrote, “Why are all the comments disagreeing w her omg i thought she was gonna say some crazy tattoo placement.”
A second said, “As a heavily tattooed person – please do whatever makes you happy. Who gives a [expletive] about tattoo popularity in 10 years. You don’t even know if you’ll be alive in 10 years. Live your life now babe.”
“Do NOT do this!!! If you do your baby will see it while he breastfeeds and will start reading way too early!!!” one joked.
Others pointed out that singer-songwriter Nessa Barrett has a similar tattoo.
“I agree with you. For reference: nessa Barrett,” one said.
“Like nessa Barrett ? Hers is so cute,” another wrote.
Barrett appears to have “DELICATE” tattooed in the same place McKenna was considering.
Did McKenna decide to get the tattoo?
McKenna ignored her husband and all the women reluctantly siding with him, and got the tattoo where she wanted.
In a follow-up video, she takes viewers along as she gets inked. She says she loves the result and it’s “so slay.”
Commenters on that video were supportive.
“If a man tells you not to do something, that’s like the clearest sign you should,” one said. Words to live by.
A second said, “As a tattoo artist.. I was reading the comments In the other video, and I just have to say I’m glad you got it. Lots of people were loud and wrong … take care of it the way you’re supposed to and it will heal just fine.”
“Hahaha I just commented and told you not to do it. but I consider myself proven wrong … it’s pretty cute!” another wrote.
In the comments section of another follow-up video, McKenna revealed that her husband “loves” the tattoo and even chose the font. It says “beloved.”
What should I consider before getting a chest tattoo?
PopSugar notes that chest tattoos are more visible, so you should consider this if you work in a professional setting. You may want to get a smaller, more subtle chest tattoo that can be more easily hidden, unless you live somewhere it isn’t too hot and can wear high-neck tops most of the year.
Additionally, since this area typically gets more sun exposure than other parts of your body, you should protect it with sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher).
In terms of placement, the chest is ripe with options for your tattoo. Tattoo artist Jazmin Paulino tells PS that where you decide to put your chest tattoo is up to personal preference. “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder — I truly believe that,” she says. “When it comes to the aesthetics of your tattoo, do what feels right for you and your body. My best advice would be to find a design that works with the natural curves of your individual body.”
Another thing you may consider when thinking about placement is how much pain comes with tattooing each area of the chest.
@mcennnaalynn Edit- I got the tattoo lol. I respect his opinion love my man but maybe if yall hype it up he will be less of a hater!! He’s open just needs convincing #fyp ♬ original sound – McKenna
PS reports that chest tattoos are “considerably more painful” than tattoos on other parts of the body because the skin is thinner and there is less cushion between the muscle and bone.
“The collar in particular is tough because of the bone, but most people say all of the chest is fairly unpleasant to get tattooed in general,” Paulino says. “So that’s definitely something to keep in mind.”
The outlet recommends that those with a lower pain tolerance consider a smaller or fine-line design to keep their appointment as quick and painless as possible.
