Girl dies as she's electrocuted in shower and stepdad killed trying to save her

A nine-year-old girl has died after being electrocuted in the shower and her stepdad was also killed as he tried to save her after hearing her scream.

The girl was having a shower when the double tragedy unfolded just weeks after the family had moved into their new home.

Her stepdad, aged about 33, tried to rescue her after she was electrocuted, but he was also electrocuted and died of his injuries.

The girl's mother suffered burns to her hands when she grabbed her daughter to rescue her, but was able to turn off the electricity supply at home in Avallon in south-western France, local media reported.

A source claimed the victims may have been electrocuted after a power strip was placed on the wet floor.

Police have not yet revealed how the victims were electrocuted, but they believe it was a tragic accident.

Investigators said no electronic appliance was involved when the girl and man were killed at about 7pm on Wednesday, LCI reported.

The family had just bought the house and were doing renovations, the report added.

A source told LCI: "This is a stepfamily with four children ... who had settled there a month, a month-and-a-half, and had started work.

"The mother, her boyfriend, the nine-year-old girl and a four-year-old child were at home."

The source added: "There was a power strip near the shower, and there was water on the floor.

"The mother's partner was the first to intervene, and the mother then cut off the power before trying to save her daughter and partner in vain."

The mother, aged about 30-years-old, was electrocuted when she touched her daughter and suffered burns to her hands, 20 Minutes reported.

Investigators were probing whether the incident was related to work being done on the property, as the shower head was burnt, the report added.

The grief-stricken mother was admitted to hospital for shock.

Port-mortems were due to be carried out on Thursday.

Police continue to investigate.
