A girl is dead after falling from a cliff in Tasmania.

Emergency services confirmed late on Friday the girl - who was holidaying from Victoria - fell about 10 metres during the afternoon when visiting Buckland in Tasmania's southeast.

"It appears the child was walking along the edge of the clifftop when she slipped and fell," police said in a statement.

"The child is from Victoria and was visiting Tasmania with her siblings. Her parents have now been formally informed."

A rescue helicopter was sent to the scene in the Sand River Conservation Area, which is inaccessible by road, but efforts to revive the girl were unsuccessful.

Sand River is a recreation area popular for rock climbing and bushwalking.
