Girl bottles woman who punched her boyfriend during Edinburgh shopping centre rammy

A teenage girl struck a woman over the head with a glass bottle during a rammy involving up to 25 youths in a shopping centre.

The 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, left the victim suffering from lacerations to her head and needing hospital treatment.

The victim, 23, got in a fight with the teen’s boyfriend at the Westside Plaza Shopping Centre in Edinburgh’s Wester Hailes area.

A court heard the teenager “sprinted across” and hit the woman with what witnesses described as a “wine bottle”.

At Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Tuesday the teen pleaded guilty to assaulting the woman on September 20 last year.

Fiscal depute Lindsay Magro said between 20 and 25 youths were gathered together at the centre at around 11.30pm.

Ms Magro said the woman, who was standing with the group, became involved in an “altercation” with a male who was the teen’s boyfriend.

The court heard she punched him and a “struggle ensued”.

Ms Magro said the teen ran over “with a glass bottle in her hand” and struck the victim once with it, causing her to fall to the ground.

The victim was left “covered in blood”, she told the court.

She added: “The disturbance between the large group of individuals ensued.”

Police later traced the suspect and when taken to St Leonards police station she said: “It was a big mistake. I’ve learned a lot from it. I won’t do it again.”

Sheriff Alistair Noble deferred sentence for reports until next month.
