Girl and boy, 13, arrested as fire crews remain at scene of 'challenging' blaze

Police officers investigating a devastating fire in Birkenhead have provided an update as fire crews remain at the scene of the blaze today.

On Monday evening emergency services were called to a “ very challenging” warehouse fire , on Cleaveland Street, shortly before 6pm.

Firefighters worked tirelessly to tackle the fire and almost a dozen fire engines remained at the scene hours after it broke out in order to bring it under control.

Officers said on Monday night two teenage Birkenhead boys, aged 13, were arrested on suspicion of arson.

However this morning officers confirmed it was in fact a 13-year-old girl and boy who were arrested.

A spokesman for the force said the children have been released under investigation pending enquiries with the fire service.

The spokesman added there were no injuries in the blaze and fire crews continue to work there this morning.

Dramatic photos taken today showed smoke continuing to billow from the building.

Mersey fire service said the warehouse contained a large amount of commercial waste.

In a statement last night, the force said the fire was “challenging”.

A statement read: “Crews arrived to find a large derelict brick built warehouse approx. 100 x 50 metres x 15 metres high well alight.

“The building appears to be full of commercial waste. Firefighters have set up main branch hoses to fight the fire.

“There is a large smoke plume affecting particularly Cavendish St. and Corporation Rd., also Beaufort Rd. Residents and businesses nearby should close windows and doors.

“The incident is being sectorised and foam is being used to fight the fire in addition to ground monitors and main branch hoses.

“Residents should keep medicines nearby and if any ill effects are experienced please call NHS 111.

“Please avoid the area.”

Images taken on nearby Corporation Road showed massive flames bursting from the warehouse which the fire service said contained a large amount of commercial waste.
