Girl, aged just 12, was one of group who joked about coronavirus and coughed in NHS worker's face

A 12-year-old girl and two 18-year-old women could be prosecuted after coughing in the faces of NHS workers while stating they had coronavirus.

The group of three girls were taken home by police after deliberately spluttering over the essential lifesaving medic.

It happened at Warrington Bank Quay railway station, at about 9pm on Friday.

Police in Cheshire responded to the location, just outside the town centre, on Parker Street.

The two women come from Warrington, and the 12-year-old girl lives in Widnes.

They were taken home and given strong advice about the clear and very public guidelines from NHS England about how to operate during the Covid-19 pandemic.

So far, the child and women have not been charged, but that remains an option, and police were today quick to point out the investigation remained ongoing.

It is understood the teens' parents were also spoken to and could also face prosecution.

In a message after the Bank Quay incident, police in Warrington warned: "The youths will be prosecuted as will their parents.

"Parents/ persons with PR[parental responsibility] make sure your children STAY INSIDE.

"You too can and will be prosecuted if you fail to do so."

In a statement, Cheshire Police told the ECHO: "At around 9pm, on Friday 27 March, police received a report of a small group of young people verbally abusing and coughing on an NHS worker at Warrington Bank Quay Railway Station.

"Cheshire Constabulary responds to reports of such incidents as a matter of urgency.

"Officers were at the scene within minutes.

"They detained three young people at the scene, two 18-year-old women from Warrington and a 12-year-old girl from Widnes.

"They were subsequently all taken to their home addresses and spoken to regarding the new public health regulations to help tackle the coronavirus pandemic, and an investigation in relation to the incident at the railway station is ongoing."

In other similar incidents, across the UK, a pensioner was spat on by a teenager, a man is accused of spitting blood in police officer's faces and another is accused of coughing on an officer while claiming he had coronavirus.

New powers brought in on Thursday mean that police can now take firmer action against those continuing to flout the laws aimed at stopping the spread of the virus.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Cheshire Constabulary on 101, quoting IML 669980, or give the details via https://www.cheshire.police.uk/ro/report.
