Girl, 8, tells Boris Johnson tower block safety is 'disgrace' after her home burns

An eight-year-old girl living in a flat block that caught fire has written to Boris Johnson about “disgraceful” safety failures.

The blaze broke out 10 days ago at New Providence Wharf, which was covered in deadly Grenfell-style cladding.

The fire started on the eighth floor and flames climbed three storeys up the outer wall in 15 seconds.

Residents of the 18-storey block claim a fire patrol did not warn many of them and the smoke detection system did not shut fire doors or open ventilation shafts.

Aarna Patel lives with lawyer mum Mira, 47, on the third floor of the block in Blackwall, East London. She said: “I wanted to tell Boris Johnson that things aren’t going that well.

“Ballymore [the building’s developer] wasn’t doing what they’re supposed to. They’re meant to keep us safe and they’re not.”

She wrote to the Prime Minister: “Everybody had to run... It’s absolutely disgraceful! I was at school when this happened. I came home and burst into tears.”

She added: “You need to make a change as PM. Please promise you’re going to help.”

Ballymore said wardens “successfully alerted and evacuated a significant number of residents” and “fire doors were effective given there was no internal fire spread”. It said cladding remedial work started on May 10.
