Girl, 7, fighting for her life after being found unconscious on dream Lapland holiday

A little girl found herself in intensive care in Finland with no way to get home.

Courtney Walker, 7, was on a magical Christmas holiday in Lapland with her family when disaster struck.

Ellesha Curry, a friend of the family, described how much they'd been looking forward to the holiday, Yorkshire Live reported.

"She was so, so excited the whole family were," she said.

"Especially as their mum had worked throughout the whole of Covid and they (would) finally get some family time together."

Three days into the trip mum Michelle found her daughter unconscious and rushed her to hospital.

She was transferred to a bigger facility three hours away and placed into intensive care, meaning her mum was only able to see her for an hour a day.

Doctors discovered that the young girl had diabetic ketoacidosis, a serious, sometimes life threatening condition which deprives the body of insulin.

Ellesha, one of Michelle's friends who worked with her in Rotherham A&E for several years, got in contact with the family after seeing the mum's posts about their situation.

"She was unresponsive unable to open eyes or lift her head," she said of Courtney.

"She had dangerously low potassium levels and was diagnosed with diabetes.

"Michelle was heartbroken about everything especially with being a nurse but not being able to help her own daughter"

Ellesha started a GoFundMe to raise money to help Michelle bring her family back to the UK.

Generous family, friends and strangers donated thousands of pounds to the fund, paving the way for Courtney and her family to fly home.

Now they are back in the UK where they are waiting to see a consultant about Courtney's diabetes diagnosis.

"She’s so happy to be home and back to home comforts and especially back to England to the NHS and able to get good healthcare," Ellesha said.
