Girl, 6, dodges death by seconds as huge rock plunges from beauty spot cliff

A six-year-old girl avoided death by seconds when a huge rock broke from a cliff above her and plunged to the ground.

Hallie Powell was enjoying her first day out after lockdown travel restrictions eased when she heard a crack in the cliff above at Clydach Lakes, in the Rhondda, South Wales.

The quick-thinking youngster moved "like a cat" upon hearing the noise and got out of the way in the nick of time - as a large rock landed on the exact spot where she'd been stood.

Hallie had been with her dad Tristan, 37, mum Sophie, 39, and little sister Lillie, three, visiting beauty spot lakes when the rocks fell.

Dad Tristan said: "We heard a large crack and I turned around and instinct must have kicked in for Hallie because she just moved I wouldn't even say ran towards me, she was as quick as like a cat would be.

"And the rocks smashed to the floor right where she was standing."

Lockdown travel rules in Wales were eased at the weekend allowing families to travel across the county and Tristan said the family had driven to the beauty spot to mark their first day of more freedom.

He said they were showered by smaller stones and debris and were less than four feet from where the huge slab landed.

Tristan, of Porth, added: "I was just so glad everyone was okay but in my head I was like I can't believe we survived that.

"Hallie is shaken up and we all can't believe our lucky stars that she moved away from where they fell 10 seconds earlier.

"How a nice family walk could have turned into a nightmare.

"It's hard not to think about what could have been but the most important thing is she is safe and sound

"We are just glad it missed us and now it won't hurt any other families as people know the danger now."
