Girl, 5, mauled in face by dog as police surround street

A family pet turned on a young girl and bit her on the face in an incident in Formby.

A 42-year-old man who intervened also suffered cuts to his hand while trying to ward off the dog.

Police and a rapid response paramedic were called to Ashcroft Road at around 8.20pm yesterday, following reports a five year-old girl had been bitten by a dog.

A police spokesperson said: "The five year-old girl suffered minor facial injuries during the incident which involved the family dog.

"A 42 year-old man also suffered superficial cuts to his hand during the incident.

"The dog, which was not a banned breed, was signed over to be humanely destroyed."

No arrests were made.
