Girl, 4, fights for life as 5 people shot in funeral home car park after 'argument'

Police are looking for a gunman who opened fire at a funeral in the US that has left a four-year-old girl fighting for her life and four others also injured.

The service was underway on Saturday afternoon when the firing started in the car park outside the funeral home in Indianapolis, police have said.

Officers responded to reports of a shooting which led to a girl, aged four, being taken to hospital in a critical condition.

A 16-year-old girl and a man were also taken to hospital in stable conditions, police spokeswoman Genae Cook told a press conference. Two other people went themselves to the hospital with gunshot wounds.

"We believe that both of those people were involved, or were here at the scene at one point or another," she added.

Cook said that a preliminary investigation found that an unknown man got out of a vehicle and approached another in the car park of the funeral home and an argument followed after which he opened fire.

Police believe one or two of the people shot came from inside the funeral home and that the altercation was with someone attending the service.

"We need to think about our actions, think about what we do," Cook said. "Pulling a weapon is no way to solve a problem."

Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett called it a "cowardly act".

"This afternoon our community witnessed yet another violent incident, this time with multiple victims including a young child," he tweeted.

"Tonight our thoughts are with all those impacted, including those injured in the shooting, their families, and a neighborhood scarred by a cowardly act.

"Far too many residents have borne the consequences of the combination of firearms and failed conflict resolution and I join a frustrated community in calling for an end to this cycle of violence. MPD and the City of Indianapolis will continue to try every solution, incorporate every best practice we can. But we cannot do it alone.

"It will take neighbours sharing information, supporting those who are hurting, intervening when someone is headed down a dangerous path. I urge anyone with information on this incident to share what they know and contact Crime Stoppers at (317) 262-TIPS."
