Girl, 3, crushed to death after television falls on her at family home

A three-year-old girl died after a television fell on her at her family home.

Maria Alice dos Santos Bastos was crushed under the bulky television and suffered severe chest trauma.

Although she was dashed to hospital, medics were unable to save Maria.

According to the police, the little girl was playing in the living room of the family home in Vicentina, Brazil, when the old-fashioned TV fell.

Officers understand Maria may have been leaning on the TV set for support while trying to grab a toy, which led to it falling.

Maria was taken to hospital and transferred to a larger one, where she died on Monday June 26.

The youngster sustained a severe chest trauma and was declared dead in hospital (CEN)

The Vicentina Child Protective Services have been notified about the case, which is under investigation by the Civil Police.

The police are working to determine if there was parental negligence.

Chief detective Bruno Carlos dos Santos told local media: "In principle, it appears to be an accident.

"The girl was playing at home when the TV fell on her."

The transition from CRT televisions to newer display technologies, such as LCD and LED, began in the late 2000s.
