Girl, 2, vomits blood and dies days after drinking toilet cleaner at home

A toddler tragically died a week after drinking toilet cleaner, a coroner has heard.

Little Arietta-Grace Barnett was rushed to hospital after her older sister found the two-year-old and worried she had ingested a toilet cleaning product.

The baby girl was whisked to hospital on June 28 last year then discharged five days later.

She want sent home to Fareham, near Portsmouth, to be with her mother, Lucy Cook and father Scott Barnett, a pre-inquest review was told today.

However, less than a week later, Arietta suffered a nose bleed at home before vomiting blood and was rushed by paramedics to the emergency unit at Southampton General Hospital, where she died.

Police began investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of the child after it was thought she had ingested toilet cleaning product.

The case was then transferred to the Hampshire Coroner.

Assistant coroner Rosamund Rhodes-Kemp said: "This is a very sad case.

"The reason I have been allocated this case is because of my background in medical cases - I have 27 years medical practise.

"This is a case that started as a police investigation. As you know, we think Arietta-Grace ingested some toilet cleaner on June 28 2019, found by her sister.

"She was taken to hospital with suspected gastroenteritis but she was well enough to go home on July 3.

On July 9, very sadly, Arietta suffered a nose bleed and was vomiting blood and she was taken to the emergency unit, where she died.

"The police understanding of the investigation was based on ingesting a substance. It is believed that she ingested toilet cleaning product."

A spokesman for Hampshire Constabulary said: "We received a report of the death of a two-year-old girl from Fareham, on July 9, last year.

"Officers made inquiries into the exact circumstances of her death and a file has been prepared for the coroner."

It was not yet known if the ingestion of toilet cleaner was the cause of her death.

The inquest date was yet to be decided and the pre-hearing was adjourned.
