Girl, 18, 'lucky to be alive' after crashing through hedge and into farmer's fields while drink driving

A teenage driver was told she was lucky to be alive after crashing through a hedge and ending up in a field.

The warning came from District Judge Leo Pyle after a court heard the 18-year-old had a passenger aboard after boozing.

Before banning Hannah Britton from the roads for 13 months, the judge told her: "Your responsible parents might have been going to your funeral or maybe even worse, your passenger's.

"Imbibing and then embarking on driving puts everyone at risk, not least yourself. I hope at your age you will learn a sharp lesson you will keep for the rest of your life."

A £100 fine and £115 costs were ordered from Britton, of Manor Road, Calverton. She admitted driving with 95 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood on George's Lane near the village. She was 15 milligrams over the legal limit.

Emma Wakefield, prosecuting, said the incident happened on a country lane lined with hedgerows. Fire crews and police officers attended at 11pm on May 23.

"They said the occupants were lucky they were not seriously injured," said Miss Wakefield. "She had scratches to her face and soil on her face.

"She complained of neck pain. Her passenger was unhurt. She said she swerved to miss some object on the road."

Britton later told police officers she'd had two glasses of wine.

Ben Brown, mitigating, said she wrote off a £3,500 car which she had bought only a fortnight before. She is currently working in a pub but hopes to start training to become a midwife.

He said Britton has lost her interest in driving, telling Nottingham Magistrates' Court: "She is struggling to sleep, has repeated nightmares and flashbacks of the car spinning and her climbing out of the car."
