Girl, 17, died of sepsis on school trip to New York after 'feeling ill for days'

The parents of a girl who died of sepsis on a school trip in New York said she felt the teachers were more interested in seeing the sights than getting her help, an inquest heard.

Ana Uglow, 17, had felt unwell for a week before she collapsed in her hotel room during an American history trip.

But the teen, who was a sixth form pupil at Bristol Grammar School, told her family her concerns were not being taken seriously as she struggled to breathe during a tour of the Empire State Building.

She died in hospital the following day after collapsing with blood coming from her nose and mouth.

And her mother Natalia Uglow told the coroner her daughter felt her teachers were too focused on enjoying visits to historic landmarks across the US than dealing with her developing illness.

The inquest heard that the day before her death the coroner was told the group had planned on going on a walking tour around Harlem - but she had requested to stay at the hotel.

It was later discovered she did go on the tour - and then went shopping before joining the group on an evening tour of the Empire State Building.

The next morning - on December 19, 2019 - she was found collapsed in her hotel room and died in hospital later that day.

A statement from Ana's mother Natalia, of Bristol, read in court, said: "Anastasia said that she was worried that she had a chest infection, that she felt much worse and had a fever and a cough.

"She said the teachers had really annoyed her as she was out of breath and exhausted and could not keep up with their walking, but that they just ignored her and carried on.

"She said they were 'real history fanatics and all they cared about is chasing those sites and were very excited about them.'

"I was concerned about her and said to Anastasia to speak to the teachers and ask them to see a doctor and then phone me back.

"I told her to exaggerate her symptoms if necessary to get that result and to say that her parents were concerned, I also offered to speak to them myself."

The coroner heard the group arrived in America on December 14 and were led by Ellice Clare and Rory Hambly.

They spent a number of days seeing the sights in Washington before catching a train to New York on the December 17 - stopping for the day in Philadelphia on the way.

Mr Hambly said he was aware that Ana had a "blocked nose and was coughing intermittently" when they arrived in New York and he described her as "having a cold and being run down" the following the day.

Ana had taken a few days off school to stay at her home in Bristol prior to travelling on December 12, and her mother had raised her concerns over her condition prior to her leaving.

Mr Hambly, Ana's history teacher and form teacher, said he was never made aware personally as to why she was off.

In his evidence he said on the day before she died that he reminded Ana they had the afternoon free, before an evening trip to the Empire State Building.

He said if she wanted to remain in the hotel, he would stay behind with her, but that she eventually decided to continue with the tour.

Mr Hambly said she then chose to go shopping in the afternoon rather than relaxing in the hotel.

He said: "It sounds absolutely awful saying it now, but I was a little bit frustrated she'd gone shopping all afternoon.

"I didn't say this to her, but I was thinking 'why didn't you rest this afternoon?'"

Mr Hambly admitted that even on the evening of the December 18 he had no major concerns for Ana other than a suspected cold.

"On that evening I didn't have any serious concerns about her health at all," he added.

"Yes, there had been an escalation and we'd responded to that escalation.

"At the time that seemed totally reasonable with the benefit of hindsight looking back to it now - I wish it were otherwise.

"But given the context at the time you couldn't have possibly imagined the escalation that would occur the following morning."

The inquest heard Ana knocked on Mr Hambly's door early on December 19 feeling a "little anxious" and "distressed" according to the teacher.

Soon after going back to her room to sleep though she was found with blood on her pillow from a suspected nosebleed.

Shortly after Mr Hambly was spending time getting Ana comfortable when she collapsed.

"As she slumped forward some blood started coming from her nose and mouth," he added.

"it didn't look like blood - it looked pinkie and frothy."

Mr Hambly soon called 911 and proceeded to perform CPR.

The sixth form student was taken to Mount Sinai hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

In a statement Ana's dad David's said he received a text from the headmaster with the number of a social worker, called Page, at 3.16pm.

He added: "At 3:22pm on the third attempt while also trying to call Natalia, I got through to Page who began to tell me that Anastasia had been found with a lot of blood in the room and that her heart had stopped.

"She mentioned Mr Hambly had been going to stay in her room that morning. I stopped her, asking if Anastasia was alive or dead.

"She said the medical staff had been able to get a pulse in the ambulance but not again at the hospital.

"She burst into tears and said that such a death was so rare in a 17-year-old."

The cause of Ana's death read out today in Avon Coroners Court read: "Bronchophneumonia and sepsis complicating influenza A H3 Upper respiratory Infection."

The inquest continues this week and will hear evidence from medical specialists and other witnesses.
